Walk-in tubs for Sierra Vista and Cochise County

Southeastern Arizona is home to Fort Huachuca, a large veteran community and some of the steepest historic streets in the state. Here is how we plan a safer bathroom down here.

  • Since 2012
  • Installed in as little as one day
  • Install or supply-only, statewide

Direct answer: Walk In Tubs Arizona, an Aging Safely Baths company, installs walk-in tubs and roll-in showers in Sierra Vista, Huachuca City, Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Willcox, Tombstone and the rest of Cochise County, or ships them supply-only for your own ROC-licensed contractor. The area

A corner of Arizona with its own rhythm

Cochise County runs from the grasslands around Willcox to the Mexican border at Douglas and Naco. Sierra Vista, its largest city, grew up next to Fort Huachuca, and many people who served there chose to stay or come back to retire. Benson and the San Pedro Valley draw retirees too, and Bisbee's old mining town draws people who love history and do not mind stairs.

The climate is gentler than Phoenix. Sierra Vista sits a little over 4,600 feet up, so summers are warm rather than scorching and winter nights can dip below freezing. The monsoon, on the other hand, is often dramatic here, with fast-building afternoon storms in July and August. Each of these details shows up in how we plan a bathroom project.

Military retirees and veterans

Many Sierra Vista households already use VA care, which makes the HISA grant a natural first question to ask.

Hills and historic stairs

Bisbee and parts of Douglas have older homes on steep lots. The path from the street to the bathroom gets checked before anything is ordered.

Four mild seasons

Freezing nights in winter mean exterior-wall plumbing deserves a look, and a deep bath benefits from an inline heater.

Veterans

Veterans: start with your VA team

If you get care through the VA, the bathroom conversation often starts there. The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, based in Tucson, runs a clinic in Sierra Vista. Your primary care team can refer you to the people who evaluate home safety and can prescribe changes through the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant.

A HISA request needs a prescription from a VA physician, photos and an itemized estimate. We provide the estimate and the product details at no charge, and we can quote two options, for example a walk-in tub and a low-threshold shower, so your VA team can see both. Our VA and ALTCS guide walks through the steps.

Aging services

SEAGO and other local help

Cochise County is part of Region VI, served by the SouthEastern Arizona Governments Organization (SEAGO) Area Agency on Aging, which also covers Graham, Greenlee and Santa Cruz counties. SEAGO is the place to ask about in-home help, caregiver support, and any home repair or adaptation funds available in the region. The DES directory lists SEAGO at 520-432-2528; confirm before you call, since numbers change.

  • Ask about waitlists early. Programs that help with home changes are small and fill quickly.
  • Ask about caregiver respite. If a spouse or adult child helps with bathing, the Family Caregiver Support Program may offer training or a break.
  • Ask about ALTCS. If care needs are high and income is limited, AHCCCS's long-term care program may cover home modifications through a case manager.

Our Area Agencies on Aging guide explains what each agency can do and how to prepare for the call.

Housing

Homes from Fort Huachuca to Bisbee

Housing in Cochise County ranges widely, and each type changes the plan a little.

  • Sierra Vista subdivisions: many single-story homes from the last several decades with standard tub alcoves. These are often the easiest places to set a full-size walk-in tub or convert a tub to a low-threshold shower.
  • Older homes in Bisbee and Douglas: smaller bathrooms, older drain lines and cast-iron or steel tubs that take more effort to remove. Bisbee homes may have long flights of steps between the street and the door, which is when a shower kit that comes in panels can make more sense than a one-piece tub.
  • Manufactured homes and rural properties: common around Benson, Huachuca City, Willcox and the Sulphur Springs Valley. We check doors, bathroom size and floor support, since a filled walk-in tub is heavy. See our manufactured home guide.
  • Wells and rural water: some properties outside town are on private wells. Water hardness and minerals vary, so a water test helps before choosing a jetted tub.

Timing

Monsoon season and scheduling

The official monsoon runs from June 15 to September 30, and southeastern Arizona often sees strong afternoon storms. That rarely stops an install, but it is worth planning for. Morning starts, a dry path for carrying the tub in, and a quick check of the forecast help the day go smoothly. If your walk-in tub has jets, a heater or a powered drain, it is also worth knowing how it behaves in a power outage. Our monsoon guide covers that in plain terms.

Tub or shower

Choosing what fits

A walk-in tub fits people who can sit down and stand up from a chair-height seat and who want to soak. A low-threshold or roll-in shower fits people who use a walker or wheelchair, who find any step hard, or who want the simplest daily routine. Many Sierra Vista households have two bathrooms and end up with one of each. The Fit Check and our tub or shower guide are good places to start.

FAQ

Cochise County questions

Do you install walk-in tubs in Sierra Vista and Bisbee?

Yes. We install throughout Cochise County, including Sierra Vista, Huachuca City, Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Willcox and Tombstone. For homes with long flights of steps, we check the path first and may suggest a compact tub or a shower kit that arrives in panels.

How do Sierra Vista veterans ask for a VA bathroom grant?

Talk with your primary care team at the Sierra Vista VA Clinic, part of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System. A VA physician must prescribe the change for a HISA grant. We provide the itemized estimate and photos the request needs.

Which Area Agency on Aging serves Cochise County?

SEAGO's Area Agency on Aging serves Cochise, Graham, Greenlee and Santa Cruz counties. Ask about in-home help, caregiver support and any home repair or adaptation programs, and ask whether there is a waitlist.

Does winter weather in Sierra Vista affect a walk-in tub?

Winter nights can freeze, so plumbing on exterior walls deserves a look before install. A deep tub also loses heat in a cool bathroom, so an inline heater and a heated backrest add comfort.

Can you install during the monsoon?

Yes. We start early in the day, keep the path dry and watch the forecast. If a storm is moving in at delivery time, we wait it out or reschedule rather than carry a tub through a downpour.

Is there an in-home sales presentation?

No. You can get a written quote by phone, from photos, or at a measurement visit if you want one, and you can take as long as you like to decide.

Veteran or not, the first step is a conversation.

Tell us what bathing is like right now. We will send a written plan and an itemized quote that works for VA paperwork too.
